Trucking in Colorado — what you need to know before you start
Colorado trucking compliance services keep your operation legal under federal FMCSA rules and Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) intrastate authority requirements. Denver is the largest freight hub in the Mountain West, with year-round freight demand from manufacturing, agriculture, energy, and a fast-growing population corridor along the Front Range from Fort Collins to Pueblo.
I-25, I-70, and I-76 all run through Colorado, making it a critical North-South and East-West corridor for OTR carriers serving the Rocky Mountain West. Colorado does enforce additional safety rules around mountain driving, including chain laws on steep grades during winter — something every carrier operating Colorado lanes needs to know about.
Everything a Colorado carrier needs — under one roof
We handle all federal and Colorado-specific filings so you can focus on hauling, not paperwork.
LLC / Business Formation
Start your Colorado trucking business with the CO Secretary of State. LLC,Business Tax Assistance, and operating agreement included.
USDOT Number Registration
Filed correctly with FMCSA the same business day. Most DOT numbers are active within 1 to 2 business days.
MC Authority (Operating)
Get your Motor Carrier number from the FMCSA. Required for all interstate for-hire freight crossing state lines.
IFTA Registration & Filing
Indiana is your IFTA base jurisdiction. We register the account, issue decals, and file your quarterly fuel tax returns.
BOC-3 Filing
FMCSA-required for all carriers and brokers. We cover all 50 states and Washington D.C. in a single blanket filing.
Drug & Alcohol Consortium
DOT-mandated random testing program enrollment with FMCSA-compliant consortium membership and Clearinghouse reporting.
Colorado-specific requirements competitors won't tell you about
Beyond federal FMCSA requirements, Colorado has its own set of rules including mountain driving regulations. Get these wrong and you're parked at the scale or paying thousands in fines.
IFTA Quarterly Fuel Tax
Colorado is a full IFTA member. You must file quarterly fuel tax reports for every state you operate in. Missing a deadline triggers late penalties and potential license revocation.
UCR Annual Registration
Unified Carrier Registration must be renewed every year before December 31. Operating interstate without a current UCR triggers fines starting at $100 per violation.
SCDMV Intrastate Authority
Carriers operating only inside Colorado for hire need intrastate authority through the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. Separate from federal MC authority and required for in-state-only freight.
SC Annual Property Tax on Trucks
From September through May, Colorado enforces chain laws on commercial vehicles operating on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero. All commercial trucks must carry chains during chain law activations. Fines start at $500 per violation.
Why Colorado is one of the best states to start a trucking company
Colorado combines population growth along the Front Range, freight gateway status to the Mountain West, and reasonable business costs — strong fundamentals for owner operators serving the Rocky Mountain region.

Frequently asked questions
Starting a trucking business is not just about knowing how to drive. It is about building a legal, compliant operation that brokers will load, banks will fund, and the FMCSA will not shut down.
An LLC is not federally required, but a Colorado LLC is strongly recommended. It separates your personal assets from business liability, lets you open a business bank account, and is required by most lenders, factoring companies, and shippers. We file Colorado LLCs with the CO Secretary of State the same business day.
Colorado LLCs must file a periodic report with the Secretary of State annually during the LLC’s anniversary month, with a $10 filing fee. Missing the filing leads to noncompliant status and eventual dissolution. We track periodic report deadlines for our compliance clients.
From September through May, Colorado activates chain laws on I-70 between Morrison (mile marker 259) and Dotsero (mile marker 133) when winter conditions require. All commercial vehicles operating on this corridor must carry approved chains and use them when the chain law is active. Fines start at $500 per violation, $1,000+ if the truck blocks traffic.
Most USDOT numbers are issued within 1 to 2 business days when filed correctly. We submit your application same-day and most Colorado owner operators have an active DOT number by the end of the next business day. MC authority takes longer because of the federal 21-day protest period.
If you operate purely intrastate (only inside Colorado), you need Colorado Public Utilities Commission intrastate authority and a USDOT number. If you only run interstate routes, your federal MC authority is enough. Carriers running both intrastate and interstate freight in Colorado need both authorities.
If you operate a qualified vehicle (26,001+ lbs or 3+ axles) across state lines, you need IRP apportioned plates issued through the Colorado DOT. The plates let you operate in all participating jurisdictions under one registration. We coordinate IRP setup with your IFTA and DOT registration.
