What is IFTA registration?

IFTA registration for trucking companies is the process of getting a fuel tax license under the International Fuel Tax Agreement, which simplifies fuel tax reporting across 48 U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces. Instead of filing fuel tax returns separately in every state you drive through, you file one quarterly report in your base jurisdiction.

You apply for IFTA in your home state, called your base jurisdiction. Once approved, you receive an IFTA license and two decals per qualified vehicle. Those decals must be displayed on both sides of every truck operating in interstate commerce with a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds or with three or more axles.

Who needs IFTA registration?

Not every trucker needs IFTA. The rule is straightforward: if your truck is heavy enough and you cross state lines, you need it.

Interstate Owner Operators

Owner operators running qualified vehicles across two or more states or provinces need IFTA decals for owner operators. Single-state operations are exempt.

Fleet Operators

Any fleet with one or more qualified motor vehicles in interstate operation needs IFTA. Each truck gets its own pair of decals, but the fleet files one combined return.

Long Haul Carriers

Long-haul drivers crossing multiple states routinely benefit most from IFTA. Without it, you would file fuel tax returns separately in every state you fueled or drove through.

What happens if you operate without IFTA?
Operating a qualified motor vehicle in interstate commerce without an active IFTA license and visible decals is a citable offense in every IFTA jurisdiction. Fines start around $100 per violation and escalate quickly with repeat citations. Some states impose additional trip permit fees or out-of-service orders until the IFTA license is presented at the scale.
Roadside Citations

Drivers without visible IFTA decals get cited at any scale or roadside inspection. Tickets average $100 to $500 per state, per violation.

Trip Permit Costs

Without IFTA, you must buy a temporary fuel trip permit in every state you enter. These run $50 or more per state and add up fast.

Out-of-Service Risk

Some states will hold the truck at the scale until an active IFTA license is produced. Loads sit, customers reroute, and your reputation takes a hit.

IFTA vs other recurring filings
IFTA is one of several recurring filings every interstate carrier deals with. Here is the picture.
IFTA License

Annual fuel tax license with quarterly returns. Required for qualified interstate vehicles.

UCR

Annual Unified Carrier Registration fee. Tied to fleet size, due December 31 each year.

MCS-150

Biennial DOT information update. Required every 2 years to keep your DOT number active.

IRP Plates

International Registration Plan apportioned plates. Separate from IFTA, needed for the truck itself.

No. IFTA only applies to interstate operations of qualified motor vehicles. Pure intrastate carriers do not need IFTA. If you cross even one state line in a qualified vehicle, you need it.

A qualified motor vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds, or three or more axles regardless of weight, or is used in combination where the combined weight exceeds 26,000 pounds. Most class 7 and class 8 trucks qualify.

Most states issue the IFTA license and decals within 1 to 2 weeks of application. A few states are faster (3 to 5 days), and a few are slower (3 weeks). We file the same business day to start the clock immediately.

Yes. IFTA licenses and decals expire on December 31 each year. Renewal opens in October. New decals must be displayed on every qualified vehicle by January 1 to stay compliant. We send renewal reminders before the deadline.
