Trucking in Tennessee— what you need to know before you start
Tennessee trucking compliance services keep your operation legal under federal FMCSA rules and Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security intrastate authority requirements. Tennessee sits at the geographic center of the Eastern half of the country, with Memphis serving as the second-busiest cargo airport in the world and Nashville anchoring one of the fastest-growing distribution corridors in North America.
I-40, I-65, I-75, and I-24 all converge through Tennessee, making it a natural base for owner operators running regional Southeast and Midwest lanes. The state has no income tax on wages and reasonable LLC formation costs, which keeps overhead low for new carriers.
Everything a Tennessee carrier needs — under one roof
We handle all federal and Tennessee-specific filings so you can focus on hauling, not paperwork.
LLC / Business Formation
Start your Tennessee trucking business with the TN Secretary of State. LLC, Business Tax Assistance, and operating agreement included.
USDOT Number Registration
Filed correctly with FMCSA the same business day. Most DOT numbers are active within 1 to 2 business days.
MC Authority (Operating)
Get your Motor Carrier number from the FMCSA. Required for all interstate for-hire freight crossing state lines.
IFTA Registration & Filing
Tennessee is your IFTA base jurisdiction. We register the account, issue decals, and file your quarterly fuel tax returns.
BOC-3 Filing
FMCSA-required for all carriers and brokers. We cover all 50 states and Washington D.C. in a single blanket filing.
Drug & Alcohol Consortium
DOT-mandated random testing program enrollment with FMCSA-compliant consortium membership and Clearinghouse reporting.
Tennessee-specific requirements competitors won't tell you about
Beyond federal FMCSA requirements, Tennessee has its own set of rules. Get these wrong and you're looking at fines, failed audits, or revoked authority.
IFTA Quarterly Fuel Tax
Tennessee is a full IFTA member. You must file quarterly fuel tax reports for every state you operate in. Missing a deadline triggers late penalties and potential license revocation.
UCR Annual Registration
Unified Carrier Registration must be renewed every year before December 31. Operating interstate without a current UCR triggers fines starting at $100 per violation.
TN Intrastate Authority
Carriers operating only inside Tennessee for hire need intrastate authority through the TN Department of Safety. Separate from federal MC authority and required for in-state-only freight.
TN Annual Report Filing
Tennessee LLCs must file an annual report with the Secretary of State and pay franchise/excise tax. Missing the annual filing triggers administrative dissolution of your trucking LLC.
Why Tennessee is one of the best states to start a trucking company
Tennessee combines no state income tax on wages, central Eastern US location, and major distribution hubs in Memphis and Nashville — strong fundamentals for new owner operators.

Frequently asked questions
Starting a trucking business is not just about knowing how to drive. It is about building a legal, compliant operation that brokers will load, banks will fund, and the FMCSA will not shut down.
An LLC is not federally required, but a Tennessee LLC is strongly recommended. It separates your personal assets from business liability, lets you open a business bank account, and is required by most lenders, factoring companies, and shippers. We file Tennessee LLCs with the TN Secretary of State the same business day.
Every Tennessee LLC must file an annual report with the Secretary of State by the first day of the fourth month after fiscal year end. The fee is $300 per year for most LLCs. Missing the filing leads to administrative dissolution. We file annual reports as part of our ongoing compliance program.
Most USDOT numbers are issued within 1 to 2 business days when filed correctly. We submit your application same-day and most Tennessee owner operators have an active DOT number by the end of the next business day. MC authority takes longer because of the federal 21-day protest period.
If you operate purely intrastate (only inside Tennessee), you need TN intrastate authority and a USDOT number. If you only run interstate routes, your federal MC authority is enough. Many Tennessee carriers running both intrastate and interstate need both authorities.
Tennessee imposes a franchise tax (0.25% of net worth) and an excise tax (6.5% of net earnings) on most LLCs and corporations. Owner operators with active trucking businesses generally owe at least the minimum franchise tax of $100 per year. We coordinate registration with the TN Department of Revenue.
If you operate a qualified vehicle (26,001+ lbs or 3+ axles) across state lines, you need IRP apportioned plates issued through the TN Department of Revenue. The plates let you operate in all participating jurisdictions under one registration. We coordinate IRP setup with your IFTA and DOT registration.
